How do I calculate hours worked in a shift?

Subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time to get the elapsed shift duration, then subtract the unpaid break minutes. For example 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes elapsed; a 30-minute unpaid break leaves 8 hours worked, or 8.00 decimal hours.

How this hours worked calculator works

This calculator measures time, not money. For each shift it takes the clock in time and the clock out time, works out the elapsed duration between them, then subtracts the unpaid break minutes you entered to give net worked time. Shifts that finish after midnight are handled automatically: when the clock out time is earlier than the clock in time, a full day is added before subtracting. You can add as many shifts as you need — a split shift, a run of night shifts or a few separate days — and the summary reports the combined total in both hours and minutes and decimal hours. Nothing is sent to a server; totals update as you type.

Formulas used

Elapsed minutes = clock out − clock in (if clock out is earlier than clock in, add 24 hours)
Applied break minutes = min(unpaid break entered, elapsed minutes)
Net worked minutes = elapsed minutes − applied break minutes
Total hours worked = sum of net worked minutes for every shift ÷ 60
Decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60)

A care worker records three shifts in a row: a standard day, a short evening shift and a night shift that runs past midnight.

Shift 1 runs 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, which is 8 hours 30 minutes elapsed; deducting the 30-minute unpaid break leaves 8 hours worked, or 8.00 decimal hours. Shift 3 starts at 22:00 and ends at 06:00, so the overnight rule adds a day and counts 8 hours elapsed, less a 45-minute break, for 7h 15m. Across all three shifts the total is 19h 15m, or 19.25 decimal hours.
