How to use the Overtime Calculator

This calculator turns hours you already know into money. Enter your base hourly pay rate, the number of regular hours paid at that rate, and the number of overtime hours paid at a premium. Choose an overtime multiplier — 1.5x is the most common — and the summary immediately shows your overtime rate per hour, regular pay, overtime pay and estimated gross pay. Leave the hourly rate blank and no pay figures are shown, so you never see a misleading total. Every figure updates as you type and is worked out on your own device.

Overtime pay formula

  • Regular pay = hourly pay rate x regular hours
  • Overtime rate = hourly pay rate x overtime multiplier
  • Overtime pay = overtime rate x overtime hours
  • Estimated gross pay = regular pay + overtime pay
  • Total hours = regular hours + overtime hours

Money results are rounded to two decimal places for display only; the underlying arithmetic keeps full precision, so you will never see a result such as $179.999999999.

Worked example

A warehouse worker paid $20.00 an hour works 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours in a week, with overtime paid at time and a half.

Overtime pay example at $20.00 per hour with a 1.5x multiplier
FigureWorkingResult
Regular pay$20.00 x 40$800.00
Overtime rate$20.00 x 1.5$30.00/hour
Overtime pay$30.00 x 6$180.00
Estimated gross pay$800.00 + $180.00$980.00

Change the multiplier to 2.0x and the same 6 overtime hours would be worth $240.00 instead, for an estimated gross pay of $1,040.00.

Understanding overtime multipliers

The multiplier is how much more each overtime hour is worth compared with a regular hour. A 1.0x multiplier pays straight time — extra hours at the normal rate, common for hours that are additional but not premium. A 1.5x multiplier is time and a half, the most widely used overtime premium. A 2.0x multiplier is double time, often reserved for holidays, rest days or long consecutive stretches. Some workplaces use other figures such as 1.25x or 1.75x, so a custom multiplier is supported. Whichever value you use, the calculator applies it to the base hourly rate only, never to hours already counted as regular.

Regular pay versus overtime pay

Regular pay covers hours paid at your base rate — most of a normal week. Overtime pay covers the hours your employer treats as overtime, valued at the base rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier. The two are calculated separately and then added together, which is why raising the multiplier changes only the overtime portion of your estimated gross pay. Splitting the figures this way also makes it easy to check a payslip line by line: compare the hours and the rate shown for each line against the results here.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate overtime pay?
Multiply the hourly pay rate by the overtime multiplier to get the overtime rate, then multiply that by the number of overtime hours. At $20 an hour with a 1.5x multiplier, the overtime rate is $30 an hour, so 6 overtime hours is $180.
What does time and a half mean?
Time and a half is an overtime multiplier of 1.5. Each overtime hour is paid at 150% of the base hourly rate, so a $20 base rate becomes $30 for every overtime hour worked.
What is double time?
Double time is a 2.0x multiplier: each overtime hour pays twice the base rate. Some employers or agreements apply it to holidays, seventh consecutive days or hours beyond a daily limit.
Can I use a custom overtime multiplier?
Yes. Choose Custom in the multiplier control and type any positive number, for example 1.25 or 1.75, to match your employer's premium or collective agreement.
Does this calculator work out tax or take-home pay?
No. It shows estimated gross pay only — pay before income tax, national or state deductions, benefits and any other withholding. Your payslip total will be lower.
Does this calculator decide whether I am legally entitled to overtime?
No. It is a mathematical estimator. Overtime eligibility and pay rules vary by jurisdiction, occupation, employer, collective agreement and other circumstances, so check your contract or a qualified adviser.
What if I do not know how many hours are overtime yet?
Use the Time Card Calculator to enter a full Monday-to-Sunday schedule and let it split regular and overtime hours for you, or use the Hours Worked Calculator to measure individual shift durations first.
